Intreaction Design Workshop

Student projects with real-world impact

What Is Interaction Design Workshop?

This is a hands-on course in the Human-Computer Interaction MA programme at Tallinn University. It brings together students, teachers and external partners to explore real challenges through user research, interaction design, prototyping and evaluation.

The course has served as a platform for industry collaboration, allowing students to work on open-ended design problems proposed by companies, public sector organisations, start-ups and non-profit partners. The projects presented here show how HCI students turn research insights into concrete concepts, prototypes and design recommendations.

About the program

The Interaction Design Workshop is a 10 ECTS course in which students apply and integrate the methods, skills, and knowledge developed throughout the Human-Computer Interaction programme. The course focuses on the full interaction design process: understanding the context, conducting user and stakeholder research, identifying design opportunities, developing concepts, prototyping solutions and evaluating user experience.

Students work in teams and engage with authentic design situations. The challenges are often complex, socially relevant and technologically ambitious — ranging from accessibility and health-related services to data visualisation, AI-supported tools, behaviour change, urban digital services and new product concepts.

Learning through collaboration

The workshop is built around collaboration with external partners. Partners bring real questions, domain knowledge and access to relevant contexts. Students bring research-based design thinking, fresh perspectives and the ability to turn uncertainty into structured design exploration.

This format creates value for both sides. Students experience the realities of professional design work, including ambiguity, stakeholder communication and iterative decision-making. Partners receive research insights, tested concepts, prototypes, and strategic input to support further product, service, or organisational development.

For future students

The projects on this page offer a glimpse into what studying Human-Computer Interaction at Tallinn University can look like in practice. You will see how students move beyond classroom exercises and work with real partners, real users and real constraints.

The workshop helps students develop confidence in planning and conducting design processes, selecting appropriate methods, communicating findings and creating meaningful interaction design outcomes. It is also an opportunity to build a professional portfolio and explore possible directions for a master’s thesis or future career.

For industry and public sector partners

Interaction Design Workshop offers a structured way to collaborate with Tallinn University’s HCI students and academic staff. It is especially suitable for organisations that want to explore early-stage product or service ideas, understand user needs, improve existing digital experiences or investigate future-oriented concepts.

A good workshop challenge does not need to have a predefined solution. In fact, the course works best with open questions where research, design exploration and prototyping can help clarify the opportunity space. Partners contribute context and feedback, while student teams investigate the challenge and present their outcomes at the end of the semester.
